Not only are they going to save your poor back! But they’re easy to store, energy efficient and can reach all the awkward places that you wouldn’t normally be able to reach.
The first handhelds weren’t very good, to be honest, it was more of a gimmick than anything. They didn’t have the power to do any real cleaning and were useless against pet hair, now we have specific handhelds for pet hair.
The market has changed, we’ve gone ahead and reviewed the best handheld vacuums out there, check them out below.
Best Handheld Vacuum Cleaners:
Black & Decker CHV1410L
This model is perfect for small spaces, it’s lightweight and completely cordless to ensure that you have complete freedom of movement whilst cleaning your home. As far as they go the CHV1410L is quite basic, but that is what is so appealing about it. It does not mess around and try to be something it is not, it does exactly what you want. Now this sort of handheld vacuum would not replace a traditional vacuum however it can supplement it perfectly and it provides very good value price wise.
Ideal for small cleaning jobs, such as spilt coffee beans or something similar. Perhaps you want to vacuum a hard to reach place? Then that’s where this model comes into its own, the long thin end is ideal for such places like a wine rack, that you’d have no chance otherwise.
This isn’t something that would be used every day and with the Lithium-ion battery that holds it’s charge for up to 18 months that isn’t a problem. It charges 5 times faster than a normal battery yet is more powerful. The issue with cheaper and lower quality vacuums is you have to make sure they’re charged constantly whereas with this it can be something that is used when you need it. Not when you plan to need it.
Pros of the Black + Decker CHV1410L:
- Lithium-Ion battery – Long-lasting, rechargeable powerful battery sure to keep going.
- Long Nozzle – Makes difficult places to reach easily.
- Price – A very fair price for the amount of equipment and the level of manufacturing involved.
- Energy usage – This has been granted its own energy star rating which means it will not cost you much money to charge.
- 2 years warranty
- Battery is not replaceable
- It could be considered quite noisy compared to some of its competitors
- Small dirt compartment which requires emptying often
This product is ideal to supplement current cleaning tools and should be used as a spot cleaner, it is made very well and offers great value compared to its competitors. This is why this is our best bang for buck handheld.
Dirt Devil SD20005
If you were asked to picture a handheld vacuum in your head before I showed you a picture, it would probably look exactly like the Dirt Devil SD20005. It isn’t a world class piece of engineering, something that will revolutionize the way you clean your home. So why should you consider buying this product?
It does exactly what it needs to, it is useful for spot cleaning when you need it, it is perfect for hard to reach areas as it is so small. in short, it does exactly what you’d expect.
This model comes with a 7A motor which delivers surprisingly powerful suction, with this powerful motor, however, this does mean this product is corded. Corded isn’t always a con as you don’t have to worry about charging unless you spend more to get a Lithium-ion battery. It is bagless so you do not need to worry about constantly replacing bags, just a simple catch and empty the debris into the trash.
Ideally suited for something in the workshop, shed, garage it is ideal to clean up spills that you wouldn’t like to use your main vacuum on. Such as thick greasy mud for example. Crevice tool, dusting brush, sliding brush & upholstery tool are all included in this package that is less than $25.
Pros of the Dirt Devil SD20005:
- Price – Coming in at under $25 it is an absolute bargain!
- Weight – weighing only 3.75lbs
- Long cord length
- Powerful 7A motor
- 3-year warranty!
- Corded – Even though it does come with a long cord it’s not quite as handy as a battery
There aren’t many cons to this product, if you compare it to the top of the range models it will always fall short but none of them can compete on the price.
This model looks awesome I must say, they pivot feature is so handy for getting on top of shelves or bookcases. Having the ability to put the nozzle whatever angle you need is perfect so all those little annoying areas hidden around the house that would normally get looked over otherwise. It’s quite unique however it isn’t the only Black+Decker pivot model to make the list, this is something that is exclusive to Black & Decker.
This comes with Lithium technology to ensure you never lose suction, this will also hold it charge for up to 18 months. Chargeable in under 5 hours unless you’re using this every day a charge should last the whole month with regular usage still. It comes with a 20V motor capable of very good suction and when we tested it couldn’t find any real power difference between an everyday upright, which is, even more, impress when you consider how small this folds up, easily stored it will stand on its own fully folded or can be placed in virtually any cupboard space.
A common problem with any vacuums, especially the smaller ones is the potential loss of suction. It’s annoying! Halfway through a clean and you have to unclog the vacuum which usually makes more mess than when you first started. This model comes with cyclonic action, which basically spins the dust around away from the filter, meaning that it gets clogged up far less, if ever.
The wide mouth design scoops up a lot of debris at a time, it gives you the feeling of pinpoint cleaning without having to spend a lot of time cleaning a small area.
Pros of the Black+Decker BDH2000PL:
- Pivot Suction – It’s very useful when cleaning high or low, it can save getting the ladder out to reach awkward places more than you might think
- Lithium Technology – Making sure that you don’t run out of charge midway through a clean
- Storage – It folds down so small that it can virtually be stored anywhere
- Cyclonic Action – To stop loss of suction
- 2 years warranty
- Sometimes the wide mouth design can make small spot cleaning more difficult
Overall this is a very good cleaner, it is also not the only cleaner of this design to make the list.
Bissell Pet Hair Eraser
This is more of a specialist item, coming with brushes to make sure that pet hair is no longer a problem. This is the only model in our top range designed and marketed towards pet hair. It does much more than that but let’s focus on that first. This is perfect if you allow your pets on your furniture, sofas are almost given a second life after a proper thorough clean and this does exactly that. Removing all the hair off the furniture usually in one wipe.
This is corded so you will have to deal with that, so the range of motion is not that of a cordless handheld. The 16ft cord is more than enough for most users, however sometimes in odd places, there will not be a power socket nearby which is a downfall for this and any corded product really. The obvious plus if you’re not paying the price for the Lithium-ion batteries, which is why it is far cheaper than it’s competitors.
The clear tray allows you to see exactly when you need to empty it, it’s a good way to avoid clogging without the expensive technology.
One of the main reasons this product did not feature further up the table that 4th is because of its limited 1 year warranty, not in the flesh it feels like a well-built product and I’m sure it would last more than 1-2 years however the limited warranty compared to its competitors is what drags it down for me.
Pros of the Bissell Pet Hair Eraser:
- How effectively it deals with pet hair – This is perfect for stairs or furniture
- Price – Coming in at under $30 it’s a great addition to your cleaning toolkit
- Good design – Allows the user to know exactly when to empty the tray
- Limited warranty – I would have loved this product if it came with a 2-year warranty
- Corded – It requires more effort when it should just be a spot clean which can be used whenever wherever
This product has impressed me even with those cons, the effectiveness at removing pet hair is very impressive and for somebody who has golden retrievers, it is something I found very useful and well worth the price.
The Eureka Easyclean is a very useful product, you can see from the image it has it’s main suction with rollers. But it also works great as a spot cleaner. The idea is to make it the best of both worlds of best handheld vacuums, but does it live up to that claim?
I have been very impressed by this product the pet hair removal is excellent almost rivalling the Pet Hair Eraser. But this product doesn’t have is a spot cleaner also, this wouldn’t really add to the value. The product feels very well built and sits very nicely in the hand. It’s weighted right and feels extremely light, it was very easy for me to use it around the house and give it a good going over.
You can turn off the brush roller which is nice especially if you’re going over delicate materials as these have been known to damage. I found this was ideal for cleaning my car, I had the main suction to clean the floors and the seats whereas I had the spot cleaner to get into the crevices where most others couldn’t. Honestly, I’m running out of places to clean with all these vacuums!
This product comes with a 20ft cord which is nice and long, I hate corded vacuums where the cord is so short you need to move it around in any single room. The product is also easy to store, with the ability to wrap the cord around the base of the product, it works well and it wasn’t a struggle to get it wrapped up.
This product is another with just 1 years warranty, it would have surely been higher on the list with a longer warranty. It really is a good product and will stay in my garage for as long as it works!
Pros of the Eureka EasyClean:
- Duel cleaning – The crevice tool was particularly useful when it came to cleaning my car.
- Brush roller – The ability to turn this off is something I like also which I wish more vacuums had
- Storage – It is easy to store and the cord doesn’t really get in the way
- Quality – It feels nice and sturdy
- Corded – I feel this product would be far more expensive with a battery option, it would rival the top handhelds if it did
- Warranty – It deserves more
I really liked this product and will continue to use it in the garage for whenever I’m cleaning my car.
Bissell Pet Hair Eraser
You may be thinking, isn’t there already one of these on this best handheld vacuum list? Well yes, but this is the newer model. With that is a higher price, still under $50 so a relative bargain compared to many out there. That is the only reason it was behind the older version, it is an upgraded version but for me personally, this list is also about offering the most value for money when buying the best handheld vacuum.
Fitted with a motorized foot it almost comes the pet hair off the surface without being too vigorous, so there’s no need to worry about damaging your sofa or curtains.
This model comes with a Dual-Action Filtration System which filters out the big and small and makes the filters last far longer, it is also much better at keeping dust and the nasty stuff you clean up inside. This is often overlooked for most people, they don’t always think about actually locking up the dirt once they’ve collected and condensed it.
What I like about this model is the clear container, I’m always fascinated about what I’m actually picking up, that may just be me, but it interests me!
Pros Of The Bissell:
- Multiple Attachments Included – 3 attachments for various spot cleaning
- Cordless- Fitted with a lithium-ion battery
- Upholstery tool – Ideal for cleaning soft surfaces
- Motorized foot tool – ensures a deep clean for pet hair
- Bissell Pet Foundation – Bissell donates $10 for every pet-related vacuum on sale!
Cons Of The Pet Hair Eraser:
- Limited 1-year warranty
This is a great choice for those that have pets, however, for everyday cleaning, it is most probably overkill. It has been rated very highly and when we used tested it, it passed with flying colors.
Shark Rocket Corded Hand Vac
The first Shark product to make the list, usually Shark are very prominent in our lists but there’s a big reason why this isn’t higher on the best handheld vacuum list. It isn’t cordless, which to a lot of people may not be a problem at all, but for me it was.
The main reason I have a handheld is to get into the place’s I wouldn’t normally be able to reach with my upright, and whilst I still could, it just was a bit more hassle unplugging and re-plugging in this vacuum. The Rocket did come with a 15ft power cable so it might be ideal for many people out there it just wasn’t for me.
How did it perform? The suction is very good, it comes fitted with Never Loses Suction Technology which worked very well and honestly handled everything I threw at it, handling pet hair remarkably well for a handheld that isn’t actually designed specifically for this task. It does come with a TruePet motorized brush which technically is designed for dealing with pet hair, however when a vacuum deals with it this well it is named as a pet hair specific vacuum.
Pros Of The Shark Rocket Hand Vac:
- Very Powerful – It is a similar power to budget uprights!
- Easy To Empty Dust Cup
- Washable Filters – Something overlooked and a big money saver
- Accessories – A wide range including a motorized pet tool
- Corded – It is the only thing I can pick up on
Dyson V6 Trigger
No list detailing the best vacuums is complete without a Dyson, they’ve become renowned for developing the latest vacuuming technology, from the United Kingdom comes this powerhouse when it comes to vacuuming.
By far the most powerful vacuum on this list and my personal choice for anything that I can’t get with my upright vacuum, it is light and the only handheld on this list that you can adjust the amount of power you’re using, so you’re not draining the battery to pick up crumbs off a laminate floor for example.
Powered by the latest Dyson digital V6 motor, it is fitted with no loss suction technology. Along with a 2 tier Radial cyclone which increases airflow and picks up more fine dust than any traditional vacuum. It is very comfortable to hold, they have gone through the effort to actually design the grip for your hand rather than just leaving a handle.
Most of the weight is located near the handle so you’re not carrying something with the weight further away from you, anybody who uses a handheld will see how good that is!
Pros Of The Dyson V6 Trigger:
- Power – Fitted with the patented Dyson V6 engine it’s remarkable
- Comfort – I use this regularly and never does it hurt my hand or make me ache due to the weight
- Design – It looks fantastic, everything on it feels designed for use
- Quality – It feels very well put together
- 2 Tier Radial Cyclones – Picks up fine dust
- Hygienic Bin Empty – You can place the vacuum in the bin and empty removing any spillage risk
- Fade Free Battery – Doesn’t fade over time
I’ve owned this product for over a year and still cannot come up with any cons, which is a testament to how well designed and build this product is.
What are the benefits of a handheld vacuum?
There are many different reasons why a handheld might or might not be for you, just because it looks good does that mean you actually need one? We’ve gone through the best selling points of the handhelds below so you can decide for yourself.
Probably the biggest selling point of the handheld range, they are ideal for a small place or spot cleaning where you can’t get your upright, the kitchen side for example. There’s no way you’d want to go through the effort and set up the upright if you can have a quick spot clean.
Much like the size advantage you get, weight is also a great advantage, especially if you’re cleaning above head height. You also get rid of the risk of hurting your back by lifting too much weight.
Setting up an upright does take time, nobody is disputing that to clean a whole home, an upright is better. However to do spot cleaning or perhaps clean a car? The handheld excels here when it is just a small task and you don’t want to set the upright up.
Sometimes an upright is good much for curtains or perhaps your sofa. But if like me you have pets you know these are a hot spot for pet hair, this is where mine gets the most use. I can be delicate and thorough the same time.
We hope with the above suggestions you can pick the best handheld vacuum cleaner for you and your home.
