The 7 Best Stick Vacuums Reviewed

Convenience is the main selling point for today’s vacuum cleaners, and no other machine best fits that description than stick vacuums.

Offering powerful vacuuming in a low profile, without dealing with the constraints of maneuverability and catching dirt in every corner, corner, and space that is usually out of reach, you’re sure to get your money’s worth with a cordless stick vacuum.

Stick vacuum technology has evolved over the years as home living spaces have gotten smaller. Nowadays, the top-of-the-line cordless stick vacuums are just as effective in cleaning results as conventional models.

A couple of years ago, there weren’t that many suitable candidates for best stick vacuums. In fact, the only default choice for cordless vacuum cleaners was any product from the Dyson brand. But now, several other brands have dirty their hands in the specialized field and have presented their own variations to make the market for cordless stick vacuums more competitive.

In this article, we’ve taken the liberty of putting an exhaustive list of only those cordless vacuums that won’t just offer you premium cleaning results and great value for your money. We’ll also let you know about the essential features you need to be wary of when choosing a cordless stick vacuum for yourself.

Best Cordless Stick Vacuums

dyson v7 stick vacuum product photo1. Dyson V7 Stick Vacuum

The Dyson V7 stick vacuum is a lighter version of the more robust and expensive V8 but offers a mix of both its predecessor, the V6 and V8. This is a two-in-one powerful machine that can be transitioned into a handheld cleaner as well. It has a couple of excellent upgrades over the V6 model, including better suction, less annual maintenance costs, and longer operation time (30 minutes).

Design

The V7’s design is modern with a unique style courtesy of Dyson. Although some of its aesthetics are similar to that of the V6, Dyson has made several significant upgrades.

First of all, the V7 comes with a new dustbin release tab, a brand new battery indicator, a power mode button, and a quick-release function. The release tab sits at the top of the appliance, enabling users to pull on the tab to lift the back of the dustbin up and then force the flap on the bottom to open. This change was implemented by Dyson so that users are offered a more sanitary solution of emptying their dustbin.

The power mode switch can be found on the handle. There are two options available; low and max. It is on a user regarding which power mode they want to choose before they start cleaning.

Besides that, an exciting feature that’s available with the V7 is its quick-release system. We can use this to detach/attach tools to the machine. Once we slide a tool in, a click sound will be heard, indicating that it’s fully inserted. And when you’re done using the tool, all you have to do is press the red button that you’ll find on the wand/handheld/tool, and the tool will be released easily.

Dust Volume and Container

The V7’s dust container is similar in design to that of the V8 but with a lower capacity. When choosing between the V6 and the V7, we would opt for the V7 as it’s easier to get rid of dirt.

The V6 leans more on gravity laws, whereas the V7 features a mechanism that pushes the dirt down after we pull the red lever up. Upon doing that, the debris will be pushed inside the container, just so your hands and fingers don’t get dirty. It’s not a perfect solution in that it removes everything, but this is an easier way to clean up.

For a thorough clean, the dust cup’s outer frame can be removed.

Cleaning Performance

dyson brush rollerThe Dyson V7 provides a straight suction cleaning capability and is accompanied by a vast range of tools and accessories. Some tools even use agitation to lift debris and dirt as you are vacuuming your house. The V7’s motorhead has vastly improved its suction from the V6, offering deeper cleans.

The V7 comes in a 2-n-1 design as it switches between a stick vacuum and a handheld one. This way, users can clean more than what they could have imagined. Despite offering more versatility, you won’t experience a change in the suction capability between these two modes.

After sucking up the dirt/debris, the V7 then filters whatever it collects through the machine’s two-tier radial cyclone filtration system. The system smartly sorts out the trash and the dirt so they can be stored efficiently.

Trigger Switch

If you’re familiar with other cordless vacuums from Dyson, you’ll notice that there’s always a trigger switch that extends the vacuum’s battery life. The trigger on the V7 is entirely responsive, as it requires only a little pressure to turn the motor on. However, doing this repeatedly, especially if you’re vacuuming a large area, can be tiring.

Filtration System

Depending on what variation of the V7 you buy, you’ll either get a model that comes with only one pre-motor filter or two filters, including a second post-motor HEPA filter. For instance, the model that we’ve reviewed here is the Motorhead, which doesn’t include the post-motor HEPA filter.

If you’re looking for a V7 variant that includes this filter, you’ll need to buy the V7 Allergy, Animal, or Animal Pro+. Bear in mind, these models are pricier than the Motorhead but are well worth the investment as Dyson vacuums usually feature a tremendous sealed system.

Maneuverability

When the V7 is used as a stick vacuum, the floor head can turn 90°, making sharp turns around corners and going around furniture with ease. Besides this, the wand is pretty lightweight, allowing users to maneuver it around without tiring our arms out quickly. Also, smaller tools can be attached to the wand, giving the vaccine a greater reach when cleaning above ground.

When in handheld mode, the vacuum becomes even easier to maneuver. This is due to the decreased weight and the freedom to move the vacuum anywhere you want to.

Users can get into those hard to reach gaps and spots with the crevice tool, while the combo dusting upholstery/brush makes it more comfortable to tidy up delicate surfaces.

dyson v8 product shot2. Dyson V8 Animal

Meet the V7 successor in the form of the V8 Animal. Despite being priced at $325, the V8 Animal is considered a “basic” cleaner. Now we’re not entirely sure what that means, but this cleaner is advertised as a powerful cordless vacuum capable of matching its corded rivals’ suction and cleaning power. Besides that, it packs a big motor, floor heads, and dedicated tools with rotating brush bars.

Cleaning Capability

Depending on the tool attached to the machine, the V8 can clean via various processes. Since the V8 is basically used as a stick vacuum, the cleaning heads that come with it offer two types of cleaning styles:

  • Soft roller cleaning. This soft cleaning head can roll large debris over on hard surfaces and then suck them without sending them flying around.
  • Motorized brush roll cleaning. This brush roll agitates and lifts debris and dirt from carpeted surfaces. Even so, it can also be used on hard surfaces, but it’s more efficient for a carpeted surface.

Both tools offer the same suction power but vary in terms of agitation processes.

Even in standard mode, the V8’s suction power is impeccable, especially for a cordless cleaner. Also, when incorporated with motorized tools, it offers very effective cleaning of the floors. The V8 Animal isn’t noisy either since it runs around 75 decibels are equivalent to that as an outlet-powered vacuum cleaner.

When switching over to the MAX mode, it would appear as if the vacuum is operating at both Turbo and Nitrous modes simultaneously. The power, suction, and not are unbelievable. When you put your hand on the crevice tool’s end during MAX mode, you’ll find that both the airflow, rate, and suction power best many entry-level outlet-powered vacuums. Between 83 to 85 decibels, it’s relatively louder than most outlet-powered vacuums.

When using the Direct Drive floor head on open carts, the results are sensational. When testing the device out on the carpet, we cleared the granule/powder mix debris in only one pass. The head also displayed excellent edge cleaning, no matter which side of the head was against the wall.

When operating in standard power mode, the vacuum’s lower suction power can easily be remedied by the powered brush bar. Both of them make an excellent team in getting brilliant cleaning results and an extended runtime.

With only one pass, the vacuum effectively cleared out spilled oats without flinging particles away or leaving any leftovers. The open front of the vacuum head and the flexible bar located in the equipment’s rear end are especially useful for cleaning hard floors.

Design and Appearance

The 7 Best Stick Vacuums Reviewed 1There is no difference between the V8 Animal and other Dyson cordless vacuums when it concerns the design. It’s a stick vacuum with a detachable handheld mode, incredibly lightweight, and numerous other accessories. Switching comfortably between handheld and stick modes make the V8 Animal a truly versatile appliance.

And since it weighs around only 2.61 kg, the V8 Animal is extremely lightweight and portable, in which users will never have any trouble maneuvering the device or carrying it around from one spot to the other. It is relatively lighter than a cylinder or an upright vacuum. The accessories are easy to attach when required.

And despite the vacuum’s top-heavy design, the V8’s body is pretty well balanced. When holding the device, it feels pretty comfortable, and the placement of the battery keeps the weight of the new V8 motor balanced.

The V8 Animal has a mini “ball” joint that allows users to easily maneuver the vacuum around furniture and other objects. Thanks to this fantastic combo of lightweight design and mobility, the V8 Animal makes cleaning an overall enjoyable experience.

If there is one downside to the design, it is the dust capacity. The bin size is about 0.54 liters, which means users will likely empty the V8 animal regularly. Although to be fair, this is a problem with virtually every cordless vacuum out there. The absence of a hose also makes it hard to clean high or awkward locations, as you may be required to hold the entire device up or forgo reach using the handheld mode. Still, it’s pretty good for cleaning stairs.

Battery Usage

The V8 Animal comes equipped with one built-in battery with over four to five hours of charging time, 40 minutes of run time and standard power mode, and 10 minutes of runtime in Max mode – using non-motorized detail tools.

Both the Mini Motorized tools and the Direct Drive head acquire power from the main battery, depleting the equipment’s runtime accordingly. When using the tools, the V8 ran for approximately 25 minutes on standard power, whereas on the MAX mode, it ran between 7 and 8 minutes. The difference in cleaning time depends on the floor that users are cleaning.

Filtration System

The V8 Animal’s filtration system does an excellent job of alleviating dust, pet dander, and other kinds of allergens from letting loose. This is made possible thanks to the combined forces of cyclonic action and both post-motor and primary filters.

However, since the V8 is a backless cordless vac, the allergens will escape when you start emptying it. And since there aren’t many bagged cordless vacs available, the V8 animal is the most efficient when it comes to tracking allergies. Just be sure that when you empty the vacuum, you do so outside.

Accessories

Like other vacuum cleaners in the Dyson line up, the V8 Animal is also equipped with a slew of handy tools that make cleaning less stressful and tedious. There’s a stiff bristle brush that can retract to transform into an upholstery brush.

There’s also a wall-mounted docking station that comes in handy whenever you want to access and use the vacuum on the fly easily.

Besides the Turbo tool and Direct Drive head, the V8 Animal also comes with combination and crevice tools. We can use these to attach either to the main body or the extension tube.

dyson v113. Dyson V11 Torque Drive

The V11 Torque Drive is a vast improvement over the V10 Cyclone in that it sports a more robust digital monitor, longer battery life, adaptive cleaner head, and LCD screen.

Design

In terms of appearance, the V11 looks familiar to its predecessor, the V10. It comes with an in-hand dustbin, trigger power controls, as well as flexible attachments and cleaning heads.

Besides that, emptying the V11 dustbin is almost similar to emptying the V10. But unlike the previous models, the V11 and the V10 have the same “point and shoot” style for dustbin draining.

With this style, no dirt or debris will ever get caught in the dustbin. Even those are V10 is pretty powerful when it comes to emptying, the V11’s design is more polished—as such, emptying the dustbin was a lot easier and smoother.

Cleaning Performance

The 7 Best Stick Vacuums Reviewed 2Like other members of the Dyson V-series, the V11 has a similar cleaning style. And like the V10, the V11 is powered by the two-tier radial cyclone system. However, V11 offers something much more. By featuring advanced floor sensor technology known as the Dynamic Load Sensor (DLS), the device adjusts its suction power automatically by the floor type it is vacuuming.

One change observed in the V11 is the cleaning head. Unlike the V10, the V11 Torque Drive doesn’t feature a soft roller head, which is both a surprise and a disappointment; however, you want to look at it.

However, the Torque Drive head has been built mostly for any floor type but excels magnificently on carpeted floors. The head features a powerful brush roll that is capable of spinning up to 60 times a second.

Accessories and Specialties

Another significant aspect of the Torque Drive is that it’s incredibly lightweight. It weighs only 7 lb and is about 4 ft long. It features five extra cleaning attachments: two brushes (mini stubborn dirt and soft dusting) and three tools (combination, crevice, and mini motorized) that you can substitute for the main head of the Torque Drive.

The cleaner head has bristles made of stiff nylon, allowing it to get rid of any stubborn carpet dirt and anti-static carbon fiber filaments so it can secure every type of dust that’s hiding in small crevices.

Another significant difference that helps the V11 stand out from the V10 is its LCD screen, which sits at the handle’s top. This feature allows users to alternate between several cleaning modes, lets them know about the run time that remains, picks up blockages and displays solutions on how to clear them, and sends reminders to get the filter cleaned.

Shark Ion F80 product shot4. Shark ION F80 MultiFLEX

Shark is also another prominent name in the vacuuming world, and the ION F80 MultiFLEX is the latest accomplishment under their belt. It is powered by a unique MultiFLEX technology and comes with a long list of amazing features.

Cleaning Power

To say the suction power of the ION F80 MultiFLEX is great is a vast understatement. According to independent tests, the ION F80 results in the airflow reaching 38 CFM when the vacuum’s cleaning mode is configured to the highest level. At its lowest level, the airflow touches 24 CFM, which is around 100 AW. It may not look like the suction is very high, but it is powerful enough to get rid of any stubborn dirt and debris that have settled in too deep within the fibers of carpeted floors.

Design

folding shark F80From a bird’s eye view, it appears that the Shark ION F80’s design is highly similar to that of the Dyson cordless series. The vacuum’s main processing unit is all in a detachable handheld with the wand that extends right to the cleaner head. This means most of the vacuum’s weight is in the palm of your hand.

A significant difference between the Shark ION F80 and the V-series is the removable battery. This especially comes in handy when you have a large area to clean. What’s more interesting is that you’ll be able to charge the used battery during your cleaning process.

Weight

When completely assembled, the Shark ION F80 weighs approximately 8.2 lb. That is half the weight of an average upright vacuum cleaner. It’s no wonder consumers find this vacuum to be quite convenient, especially if you have a home with more than one level or experience issues moving around.

The wand of the MultiFLEX can either be detached at the cleaner head or at the handheld. This means when cleaning above-the-floor areas, you’ll only be dealing with a weight between 3 to 4 lb.

Filtration

The Shark ION F80 uses washable filters for both post-motor and pre-motor filtration. These filters are made from felt and full materials and are responsible for cleaning the air that reaches the motor and the one that comes out of the equipment. To extend their usage and restore their efficiency, the manufacturer recommends washing the filters frequently. Washing them also prevents them from diminishing in suction power.

Duoclean Brush Rolls

Duoclean is one of Shark’s most recurring technologies that is always utilized in just about every product they make. You have one brush roll that’s made for carpet and another for bare, hard floors.

For some time now, users have been advised to turn their vacuum’s brush roll off so that they only rely on their device’s suction to lift debris up. This is the case because the brush roll spins very quickly and flings debris around rather than picking it up.

Fortunately, the Duoclean cleaner head solves this issue as it comes with a removable lid, making it easier for users to clean. The cleaner head smartly detaches human or pet hair around the brush roll from the wand, preventing you from awkwardly flipping the vacuum over to clean it up manually.

The 7 Best Stick Vacuums Reviewed 36. Hoover Linx Signature BH50020 PC

The Hoover BH50020 PC Linx cordless is an extremely affordable and lightweight vacuum cleaner weighing in at only 10 lb but is powerful and offers very effective cleaning results.

Powerful and Removable Battery Supply

The Linx Signature is powered by a Li-ion battery that is removable and can be charged separately from the entire device while it is still within the cleaner itself. One charge can offer you about 15 minutes of run time.

Cleaning Power

Hoover Stick Vacuum BatteryAccording to our tests, the Linx Signature offers an airflow of 31 CFM. Given the fact that it’s a cordless vacuum, that’s an impressive cleaning power, which means the vacuum can lift debris and dirt off the ground with relative ease.

But the thing that stands out about the Linx’s suction power is that the WindTunnel technology powers it. It produces suction channels and can improve the cleaning head’s suction capability, especially when it comes to embedded dirt.

Accessories

The Hoover Linx Signature features of forest brush roll that you can switch off easily from the handle. You can even control the vacuum suction power when doing bare floors. You can also switch the vacuum off easily from the handle, as that’s where the power switch is located. Thanks to the edge cleaning bristles, we can get all of the dust and dirt near baseboards and walls.

Filtration System

The Linx Signature uses a standard foam filter and cyclonic filtration. It may not be as efficient as a HEPA filter in removing allergens from the air, but it is more than enough to get the job done. Still, you need to be careful of anyone who suffers from allergies or asthma. Besides this, the vacuum’s body sealing feature is average and may not provide complete protection from allergens.

The foam filter is washable, though, ensuring your vacuum doesn’t lose any of its suction power, so long as you clean it frequently. But when you wash it, be sure to do it in warm water and not add any detergent into it. But like every other foam filter, you will need to wait at least a day before you reinstall them interior vacuum cleaner.

Powered Multi-floor Brush

The Linx Signature uses one cleaning head that is capable of cleaning a variety of floors. And given the suction power of this vacuum, you can get decent results. The cleaning head adjusts automatically depending on the floor you’re vacuuming, providing you with excellent cleaning and allowing you to save up as well.

Bissell Cordless Stick Vacuum7. Bissell Air Ram Cordless Vacuum 1984

And finally, to cap off our wonderful list, we finish off with a doozy in the form of the Bissell Air Ram 1984. Giving its design, it is only meant to clean floors and nothing else. But when it does get to cleaning, it does so spectacularly.

Cleaning Power

Bissell stick foldableThe Air Ram features a suction seal that makes it ideal for cleaning hardwood floors. It also has a suction squeeze design followed by a rubberized sweeper that changes direction, which opens and closes upon cleaning large debris that’s found on any floor. The feature also enables you to get any spot of the floor, even the ones that are difficult to reach. In addition, the large brush roll offers outstanding edge cleaning.

Battery Power

According to the manufacturer, it is revealed that the Air Ram can run for about 40 minutes thanks to its 22-volt Li-ion battery. But according to our tests, we found that the device runs approximately three more minutes than what is written in the manual. If we compare that power to some of the other models in this list, the Bissell Air Ram can run longer than the Dyson V8 in its lowest settings at 33 minutes and 30 seconds and longer than the Dyson V10 in its medium settings at 26 minutes and 57 seconds.

Dustbin Capacity

The Air Ram’s dustbin capacity is about 20 oz. And since the dustbin is attached to the cleaner head, it’ll seamlessly pick up dirt right within the tray. The bin then brilliantly compresses pet hair, dust and dirt to ensure the least amount of space is occupied, thereby allowing you to have extended cleaning sessions.

Maintenance Costs

The only part of the vacuum that requires maintenance is its filter. When we’re talking about the quality of the filter, the Bissell design isn’t as good as that of a Dyson vacuum cleaner. As such, the filter will collect dust after a couple of uses, which in turn requires more washing.

However, Amazon has filters readily available for you, which you can order while your other filter dries up. And what’s great is that these filters won’t cost you much and that you’ll get them in packs of two.

Besides that, the 22-volt Li-ion battery is detachable and a replacement battery is available only in Bissell.

Cordless Stick Vacuum Buying Guide

Suppose you’re looking for some other Dyson stick vacuum cleaner, or prefer a model from another brand. In that case, there are several things that you need to be wary of before getting yourself a cordless stick vacuum cleaner for yourself.

Why do I Need a Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner?

For one thing, a cordless vacuum is less complicated and more convenient when operating compared to a traditional outlet-powered vacuum cleaner. You’re only using a stick with a vacuum cleaning head and a motor at the top. Then there’s also the ease of maneuverability. This means that there’s no need for you to be carrying around a bag or something of heavy design when moving the device around always. Plus, it’s like a high-tech alternative for a brush and a dustpan.

Another winning aspect of cordless vacuum cleaners is their lightweight profile, making them feel like a feather compared to the cylinder and upright vacuums. The only downside to cordless vacuums is that they need to be charged often, which usually takes hours compared to the runtime that lasts in minutes. Nevertheless, the time you have when operating this device is excellent and provides exemplary cleaning results. However, one of the ways to get around this is to keep extra batteries with you if you live in an enormous household. This will give your vacuum twice the amount of runtime than before.

Furthermore, the technology involved in stick vacuums when it comes to suction power is evolving as the years go by, making cordless vacuums nearly as powerful or even a bit more powerful than their corded counterparts.

Key Features of The Best Stick Vacuums

No matter what brand or model you’re going for, users need to be wary of certain pivotal features in a cordless vacuum’s functionality. Some of those features include:

Charging and Running Time

Be on the lookout for stick vacuums that have a longer runtime and don’t take long to charge. Some models may need to be charged overnight, or maybe even longer. On average, stick vacuums take approximately 4 hours to charge. Users have around 13 minutes of operating time, depending on their power settings and the type of surface they’re cleaning. Some models even only run for six minutes at max. This isn’t good for users who have a larger area to clean. Therefore, we recommend you either get yourself a model that runs longer or swap for another battery with ease.

Lift-Away Handheld Cleaning Mode

Most stick vacuums feature a handheld cleaning mode. This is either a pull-out handheld vacuum or the more common stick design that allows you to remove the floor tool with mini tools.

Users are also granted the option to swap the cleaning tube completely and attach other cleaning tools to the central unit to turn it into a small handheld model. This mode enables users to quickly get to those tight gaps or spaces that are high up or difficult to reach, like ceiling corners or those in the car.

Some cordless models are made specifically for cleaning floors without featuring your handheld mode or clunky. That’s why it would be better to think carefully about the type of model you’re looking for.

You could even purchase standalone handheld vacuums. These models are typically cheaper and might be all you need to clean your car or the stairs.

Power

Voltage refers to power, which can affect the machine’s ability to suck dirt, dust, and other debris up. A model of 18 volts will be enough to give you these results, but the difference will be noted if you opt for a 20 Volt model, instead.

Cordless vs. Corded

Yes, there are corded stick vacuums like there are cordless stick vacuums. The difference here is that corded models are always plugged into a power outlet, offering unlimited power sources without recharging the batteries. Unfortunately, corded vacuums offer less freedom as there always tethered to an outlet, which means users can only go as far as the power cord can take them.

Cordless models, on the other hand, run on lithium-ion batteries that offer more power and durability – sometimes going as far as 60 minutes – than those of nickel-cadmium used in older models, before they need to be recharged. Some models also allow users to detach the battery pack and put it up for charging while storing the rest of the unit in a closet or some other place that’s out of sight and safely kept away from harm.

Noise Levels

A vacuum cleaner’s noise levels are measured and determined by decibels. A general conversion is rated approximately 60, whereas standard models typically clock between 70 and 80 decibels. Premium models, on the other hand, are rated lower to at least 65.

Sensory Technology

This technology allows vacuum cleaners to automatically adjust their power by sensing whatever floor they’re vacuuming. It’s a useful feature that allows vacuum cleaners to save battery life in the long term, guaranteeing that they only use power when necessary.

Filtration

Choosing a good vacuum cleaner also involves picking a model that offers fresh, clean air for our health. Anytime we empty a dustbin, there’s a risk that there will be a plume of the dirt and debris back into our houses. If you or anyone you know living in your home suffers from allergies, asthma, or other respiratory issues, we suggest getting a vacuum that offers HEPA filtration.

2 in 1 Convertibility

This feature enables vacuums to switch between a stick vacuum and a handheld one. The vacuums usually come with a trigger that releases the handheld vacuum found on the stick’s torso.
