Best Vacuum For Pet Hair

Whether you currently have a working vacuum or not you may be considering getting one specifically to deal with those hard to remove pet hairs!

We’ve put together a guide which everything you need to consider to get the best vacuum for pet hair before buying one, we’ve also recommended the best value for money pet hair vacuums at the bottom.

Why would you need a pet specific vacuum:

Depending on what pets you have you will find they moult differently and to varying degrees, if like me you have a house full of golden retrievers you will see how we need a vacuum that can deal with it.

Some people just prefer to have a thorough clean, even if they don’t own any pets. Who can blame them, nothing like a clean fluffy carpet?

Below we’ve gone over what makes a vacuum perfect for dealing with pets, and what you need to look out for. There are some things that will come down to preference, for example corded or cordless? In those cases we will cover the pro’s and con’s of such.

Things to consider:

What are you cleaning?

Are you cleaning hardwood floors, cars, carpets, sofas, beds, you could go on forever. If you’ve had pets for awhile you know that their hair knows no limits, I regularly find dog hairs halfway up the blind, how even?

If you have a vacuum that you are already using perhaps you just want something to spot clean, in that case a handheld vacuum would be the best route to take. I would never recommend you to just have a handheld within your household, that’s just far too much cleaning!

Again if you want something to keep in the garage to clean cars with, you want something with a long hose, durable and bag-less. You should look to go bag-less in this case, you will get lose stones in your carpets in the car and this can tear bags which makes for one hell of a mess!

Do you have rugs in your home, do you have a specific problem area, usually hallways that tend to get the most abuse, perhaps your animals regularly bring in mud from their paws, what is the best way to get rid of dried mug without getting on your hands and knees?

So consider what you will be using it for, or more importantly where.

Do You Need a Full Sized or Handheld Vacuum?

We touched on this before, if you have a vacuum that you feel can cope with the pet hair on a mass scale, then you should consider a handheld.

However, if it is going to be the main vacuum in the home, you should consider an upright. They offer far more flexibility than standard cylinder alternatives as they commonly come with more accessories ideally suited to clearing up pet hair.

Power – Is It The Most Important Part?

I used to be under the impression that to tackle pet hair I needed the most powerful vacuum, I now understand after dealing with probably 100’s of different vacuums this is not the case.

The best way to clear up hair is with the rollers you find in a lot of vacuums, this essentially pulls the hair from the carpet/floor and then the suction will do the rest.

Having an efficient roller IS the most important part of any vacuum you want to target pet hair specifically.

So does that mean the power isn’t important?

Well, no. Power is still important, it turns the rollers and also when the hairs have been picked up they’re stuck on the roller essentially until the suction pulls them away. So it is still very important, but you should not base a vacuums performance merely on its suction power.

It is important for any vacuum to maintain suction throughout cleaning which is done by an effective filter and a more sophisticated motor.

Cordless Vs Corded – What Comes Out On Top?

This is one of those things that comes down to personal preference, I personally use a corded machine however that is because I’m too forgetful to keep it charged. If I wasn’t I would get a cordless vacuum.

Pros Of Cordless:screen-shot-2016-09-21-at-16-48-31

  • You don’t have to keep unplugging and re-plugging all around the house
  • Cleaning becomes quicker, no need to wrap it up every time
  • Typically smaller – not always the case!

Cons of Cordless:

  • Usually weigh more due to battery
  • Must remember to keep charged
  • Cost

Pros of Corded:

  • No need to remember to charge
  • Cost – Will tend to cost less than equivalent cordless

Cons of Corded:

  • It will never match the flexibility of a cordless

Bagged or Bag-less – Is There Much Of A Difference?

It is definitely cheaper to go bag-less, you never have to worry if you’re running low for example and have to go to the shops.

However if you’re looking at it from a hygienic standpoint, the method that keeps you away from the dirt always wins. In theory using vacuum bags is a far more hygienic way of cleaning your home, at no point are you exposed to the nastiness you’ve just cleaned up.

However modern day vacuums will allow you to empty them with just one button, which means if you’re clever about it you can actually place the end into the trash and then press the button, so in theory you’re again never in contact with the mess. What this does however is give you something else to clean, a vacuum is like anything else, it gets dirty.

This has never been a problem for me personally, however I would completely understand peoples problems with using bag-less vacuums. It also depends on what you’re cleaning up, if it is a horrible substance than having it kept away in a bag and not having to worry about cleaning the tray inside the vacuum after is a big plus!

Pros of bagged vacuums:

  • Dirt is kept locked away
  • Keeps the vacuum cleaner in the long run

Cons of bagged vacuums:

  • Cost – bags aren’t free, sometimes they’re not easy to get hold of also.
  • They can be overfilled and split – which defeats the whole object.
  • Sharp debris can pierce the bag such as glass or stones

Pros of bag-less vacuums:

  • Far more efficient, no need to worry if the bag needs changing simply empty it and carry on in under 30 seconds.
  • Cheaper – No need to buy anything else
  • No prone to splitting

Cons of bag-less vacuums:

  • You can sometimes come into contact with dirt
  • They need more cleaning

I personally always go for bag-less vacuums, this is my personal preference however the pro’s really outweigh the cons and put against bagged always win my vote. When dealing with pet hair it can take up a surprising amount of room in your vacuum.

All of the vacuums we will be recommending will be bag-less for this reason, you will be ramping up the costs otherwise.

Cost – So How Much Is This Going To Cost Me?

Vacuums specifically designed to deal with pet hair normally are slightly more expensive than a traditional upright, this isn’t always the case however it does happen. Keeping your home rid of pet hair doesn’t mean taking a step up in price, by ignoring some of the mainstream adverts there are some real bargains to be had.

We only recommend products based on their value, it would be easy to recommend the best pet hair vacuum that is only really available to professionals and carries a price tag to match. Everybody no matter your price range should be able to keep their home clean from pet hair.

The Top 5 Vacuums To Deal With Pet Hair

1.Bissell 1650A Pet Hair Eraser Vacuum

71kmt5wre5l-_sl1500_Bissell are well known for making very good machines, they back up their work with reliable and very, very good equipment. We’ve been fans of them for a long time, so there should be no surprises that they have topped our list of the best vacuums for pet hair.

This is also the most expensive option on our list, we always rate products on value and we consider the price before we recommend anything. So you can be assured that what you’re getting is WORTH the money you are investing in.

The pet hair eraser really has all the gadgets you could want and more, perhaps a little too much but small things like LED lights on the crevice tools make a surprising difference after you’ve been using them for awhile.

Small touches for example that it funnels out the cleaned air in front rather than behind make it a very enjoyable experience, as far as vacuuming can be anyway. We all know pet hair can get anywhere and everywhere, the quick release wand is perfect for those hard to reach area’s that you find a hot spot of pet hair whilst vacuuming, it takes a second to release it and you’re away.

The best thing about this product is the tangle free brush roll, I’m sure you’ve have the experience of using a brush roll before, they’re great. Until they stop working of course, they get tangled up so badly that there really is no brush left visible, the way Bissell have got over this is by developing a tangle free brush tool, it really works! It looks great too, something I never thought I’d say about a brush tool before.

Pros Of The Bissell 1650A Pet Hair Eraser:

  • Tangle free brush
  • Quick release wand
  • LED-lit crevice tools
  • Smart Seal Allergen System with Febreze Pet Odor Eliminator
  • Patented Cyclonic Pet Hair Spooling System – This ensures the dirt does not get stuck inside where you need to use your hands to free
  • Pet TurboEraser Tool – This takes away the need for a handheld, it is very good for cleaning sofas or car seats

Cons:

  • Price – Whilst we believe it offers the best value, it is more expensive than the others in the list.

This comes with cyclonic technology which is the direction most vacuum manufactures are going as it delivers great suction where you don’t have to worry about loss.

3. Hoover T-Series WindTunnel Pet Rewind

51czcd5se4l-_sl1218_Our first entry from the ever reliable Hoover brand here, we have the T-series WindTunnel Pet Rewind. At first glances this product looks very well deisgned and unique, I particulary like the way they’ve designed the cord to wrap inside the main body, it looks very good. Oh and it’s an auto winding cord, which makes it even more impressive that it has been built in and doesn’t take up any extra room, if anything it takes up less.

Many of the more expensive vacuums now have an auto adjusting roller head, whilst this is very nice and “cool” it does ramp up the price, this Hoover model comes with a brush roller shut off pedal, this way you don’t scratch or damage a floor that ideally you wouldn’t brush roll such as a laminate floor.

This is a perfect tool if you don’t have a lot of spare space, the handle snaps down and locks in so you’re almost cutting the height in half by using this. There’s always the worry with most vacuums, how long do you leave it before you clean the filters? Is it too soon? How do you know? You will get a indicator light which let’s you know when you should clean the filter, that way you’re able to take the best possible are of your vacuum without cleaning it more than you need to.

Pros Of The Hoover T-Series WindTunnel Pet Rewind:

  • Clever design – With the built in cord and snap down handle it takes up very little room when compared with regular vacuums
  • Brush Roll Shut Off – Easy to change to save damaging potential glossy floors
  • Quiet – It has been commented from past users that it is surprisingly quiet for a vacuum
  • Auto Rewind Cable – This is quite rare for an upright, traditional on cylinders but a very cool feature

Cons:

  • Weight – It is 3 lbs heavier than any other vacuum on this list

4. Shark Rocket TruePet Ultra-Light Upright

81znahswipl-_sl1500_This vacuum is very interesting, you’re basically buying an upright and handheld in one. Very good is you’re in an apartment or a small property. It can fit anywhere with space and also it is easy to get to all the hard to reach places high and low. You have a machine that is capable of cleaning the floor just as well as the ceiling with no real modifications, it’s fantastic to maneuver which is one of the biggest reasons it’s made our top 5 list.

The quick release I found very useful for finding cobwebs or a spot I had missed on the ceiling as I was going the rounds, all you have to do is press down on a handle with your foot and you’re released. You can then simply place the nozzle back in, click it down and away you go again.

Often thought of as a gimmick however surprisingly useful this vacuum comes with LED’s fitting in both attachments to read under those dark spots for example, sofas or beds. It’s one of those gadgets you don’t think you need however after time you find it helpful, especially for children’s socks that seem to go missing all the time!

A common problem when vacuuming hardwood floors is they need to be wiped as opposed to being vacuumed, with this model you get a dust away hardwood floor attachment. Although this means another attachment for a different floor it’s worth it, you’re wiping and getting up all the dust at the same time.

Pros Of The Shark Rocket TruePet Ultra-Light Upright:

  • Flexibility – You can be cleaning the floor and a couple of seconds later you’re cleaning the ceiling
  • Handheld – You’re able to use it for spot cleaning by taking off the nozzle and you now have a very powerful handheld
  • Weight – Weighing less than 8lbs it is the lightest upright on this list by far
  • LED-lit attachments
  • 30 Ft cable

Cons:

  • Awkward to Store – It can be packed away very small, however as it does not stand on it’s own it needs to be either laid down or leaned against something.

5. Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Handheld

41xh0h2nblOur one and only handheld which makes the list, it would be unfair not to include one as sometimes it is only certain materials that attracts hairs, or perhaps you’re looking for something to clean out the car. In both of those cases, this is absolutely perfect. An extremely powerful vacuum that is so easy to use.

Very much the baby brother of our number 1 rated vacuum, you can see where it gets its usefulness from. It is something that if you have the big brother you do not need this, however if you are after something to supplement your currently cleaning equipment then it is very good at that.

This doesn’t have a roller, it comes with a specifically design rubber nozzle that requires a little more effort however it is just as effective on a handheld.

Pros Of The Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Handheld:

  • Cost – Under $30!
  • Weight – It offers great suction for such a small vacuum
  • Reviews – For a product that costs under $30 it has near 4,000 reviews rating between 4-5 stars

Cons:

  • None
